FAQ
Questions you might have
Grouped by where you’re coming from.
For readers new to book apps
Do I have to log every book I read?
Only the ones you want to. Most people start with one book and the person who told them about it. Reading dates, ratings and the rest are there when you want them.
How is this better than a note on my phone?
A note keeps the title. BookPocket keeps who told you about the book and why, so the person stays with it. Once you’ve rated a few books from someone, you can see how much you liked their picks, and your unread books are ordered by the people whose taste you share.
For Goodreads and StoryGraph readers
Can I bring my books with me?
Yes, from the export file either app gives you: your shelves, ratings, reading dates, reviews and tags. Import it as soon as you have an account. Import your books from Goodreads or StoryGraph says how to get the file ready.
I already note who recommended a book in a tag. What happens to those?
Tag a book recommendation-sarah-ahmed before you export, and it arrives with Sarah Ahmed as its source. Every book she recommended is listed on her page.
For book clubs
Can my book club use it together?
Yes. Each of you adds the club’s books and credits whoever suggested each one. After a few meetings, everyone can see whose picks they loved. You can add each other as friends, and send someone a book with a note about why.
About the people you add
Do the people I add need an account?
A source can be anyone or anything: a friend, a podcast, a bookshop, a magazine. They don’t need an account, and BookPocket only contacts them if you send them a book or invite them yourself.
Who can see who recommended my books?
Only you. Your sources and the reasons you record are private to your account, and nobody is told when you add them. The privacy policy has the details.
About price, apps and timing
Is it free?
Yes. BookPocket is completely free while it’s in beta, and the core stays free forever, including recording who recommended each book and seeing whose picks you love. There’ll be an optional Pro plan later for anyone who wants to support BookPocket and access additional features to gain deeper insights.
Does BookPocket recommend books to me?
Your people do. BookPocket surfaces and prioritizes your unread books by how you rated each person’s earlier picks, and shows the numbers it used. No ads, no tracking, no AI recommendations.
Is there an app?
BookPocket works in the browser on any phone or computer. On a phone, add it to your home screen and it opens like an app. iPhone and Android apps are on the roadmap.
When can I start?
The beta opens soon. Join the waitlist and we’ll email you once, when it’s ready for you.
